Why did Arkansas residents find Don Young's campaign so attractive in 2005?

What inspired the sudden spike in Don Young's campaign contributions from Arkansas residents in 2005, during a period when Alaskans were contributing significantly less to his campaign? Perhaps it was Young's $284 billion transportation bill, which passed in 2005, with $2.3 billion for Arkansas transportation projects. In 2005, Don Young reported donations of $174,500 from Arkansas, but only $127,000 from Alaska.

Young's popularity in Arkansas has plummeted since 2005:

• In 2006, contributions from Arkansas donors fell to $8,500
• Young has reported just $3,300 to date in Arkansas donations for the 2007/08 election cycle
