Don Young promotes unrestrained pork barrel spending

Several members of Congress scheduled a series of votes last year to delete 50 pork barrel earmarks from various spending bills. This effort provides a measure of Congress’ addiction to pork barrel spending. Before he skipped town, Young opposed 29 out of 31 measures that would have deleted earmarks benefitting his pork barrel colleagues, from coast to coast. During these votes, Don Young angrily lashed out. The pro-business Club for Growth responded to Young’s tirade by asking if he’s going to start biting people - click to watch this debacle on their web site. According to the Club for Growth’s President Pat Toomey "Unfortunately, most Congressmen care more about lining their buddies' pockets than they care about protecting American taxpayers."

After 7/24/07, Don Young skipped the remaining votes on reigning in pork barrel earmarks. Where was he? Perhaps he was:

  • Talking to his lawyers - the Wall Street Journal reported on July 25, that Young was under criminal investigation for his ties with Veco.
  • By August 5, Don Young was preparing for a pig roast fundraiser at former Gov. Bill Sheffield’s place!
