Don Young’s History Fairbanks vs. Don Young

Don Young began advocating increased national debt starting in 1995

“My voting pattern reflects the will of Alaskans, who overwhelmingly want limits on the Federal government's spending that over the last two decades has saddled future generations with a $5 trillion debt.” - Don Young’s Press Release, 9/24/96

Our ever increasing national debt enables Congress to borrow money from future generations to pursue its fiscally irresponsible agendas. Between 1973 and 1994, Don Young consistently opposed increasing the national debt. Since then, he’s flip-flopped.

A typical American family of four now owes $600,000 towards the national debt, using the accounting standards that Congress mandates for businesses. Under the deceptive accounting methods that Congress applies to our national debt, a typical American family of four currently owes “only” $120,000. This is up from $67,000 in 1995 - when Young first began voting to raise our national debt. This debt imposes a tax on the future taxpayers who will inherit it. Young is advocating “taxation without representation” – at its worst.

With the national spotlight shining on the recent bailout of investment bankers who made bad business decisions, Young voted against the most recent rapid-fire increases in our national debt.
